Ad Hoc Committee subjects the Public Protector process to the public

The Ad Hoc Committee for the nomination of a new Public Protector has guaranteed that the process will be transparent.

Chairperson of the Committee Dr Makhosi Khoza said they are subjecting the process to public participation as all other committees of parliament are.

The decision was reached during a meeting the committee held on Wednesday, were they were set to get the ball going on nominating the suitable candidate.

Current Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s seven year non-renewable period and term in office ends in October 2016.

Economic Freedom Fighters Leader Julius Malema urged all South Africans to get involved in the process of selecting the new Public Protector

“Politicians have got a tendency to think that, once elected, they must do everything for the public and the public will only be involved during voting after five years. I subscribe to a principle that says voters must follow their vote, they must be involved in the process,” said Malema.

The committee agreed that the post will be advertised on all major national, regional and local news papers in June.

According to Khoza, the nominee chosen by the committee would have to be supported by more than 60% of National Assembly members before the President could act on it.

Interviews are set to be held on the 31st of August.
